Durham's Christmas runs to two clocks. The university term ends in early December, so college formals, society dinners and department parties are packed into the last weeks of November and the first week of December. After that the city turns to office parties, family gatherings and the hotels along the A1 corridor, which run party nights through to Christmas Eve.
Because the city is small, a handful of dates carry most of the demand. The first weekend of December is especially tight in 2026, with the Christmas Festival in the city centre from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December. If your party is that weekend, book early and allow extra time for people to get through the centre.
Durham is about eighteen miles from Newcastle, and we recruit along the route between the two. We only charge travel beyond 15 miles of the person's base, so most Durham city bookings carry no travel line. Towards Teesdale or Weardale, travel is shown at cost and agreed first.
The peninsula is steep, cobbled and closed to most traffic, which matters when a team is carrying glassware at midnight. We brief the loading route and the nearest taxi point before the shift. Late buses around the county are thin, so for late finishes we plan lifts between the team, and people who live in Newcastle are told the last train time and whether the finish allows it.
For hotels and country houses outside the city, parking is usually easier, and we note in the brief whether staff parking is available.

A buffet needs fewer people than a plated dinner: one person to every 20 guests for service and clearing, plus a bar team that can handle the rush after the meal. Festive rates: Core £28.00, Skilled £31.00, Lead £37.00. If the night comes in under the quoted total, we refund 5%. New clients also get one person for one four-hour shift free on their first booking.

From 1 December to 2 January, Core staff are £28.00 an hour ex VAT, Skilled £31.00, Leads £37.00 and senior chefs £43.00. Most Durham city bookings should have no travel line, because we recruit within 15 miles.
Yes. We brief waiting staff on the hall, the kitchen route and the running order before they arrive, and a Lead keeps courses moving. Tell us about stairs or split rooms and we will size the team for the building, not just the guest list.
